Pregnant - redundancy

Hi All

Looking for some advice. It was announced last week that my dept is closing and we are all being made redundant in September this year.

My oh and i had decided to try for a baby (not pregnant this month) however not sure if we should put these plans on hold (currently 30) or just go ahead with the plans. Obv if i was to get pregnant within the next 2/3 months i would be pregnant when i left my current employee and i doubt anyone would be willing to employee me when pregnant.

I figure i may get about 5k redundancy and this would clear all our debts, we could only just manage on my oh wages - would i be entitled to any benefits etc.

Hope the above makes sense

Money is one thing, but your wish for a family is another one and that's quite legitimate. Biology comes into it as well, luckily age is on your side at 30 but you cannot assume that you will be immediately successful. I am not being negative, I am gently warning you that you may not fall pg immediately and delaying that sort of thing is not always a good idea.

You don't say what your current financial situation is (other income ? existing debts ?) If your finances are currently tight, it would help to sort them out as much as possible before starting a family. If not, you might like to rethink your finances as they currently are to prepare for redundancy/maternity leave - how long can you afford to be outside the job market - assuming that you would return to work post baby - how much savings do you need to build up, where do you need to cut, what's the revised budget going to look like ?

Regarding maternity benefits, I think that as you would not be claiming SMP through your employer, this would have to be done through the benefits office - I am sure somebody here can advise

HTH - good luck with your plans
    Keep calm and carry on
