Any old iron

I was off today - so difficult to know if it has happened recently, but heard the cry of "any old iron" from the road.
and there was a man with a small flatbed van collecting scrap metal.
Haven't heard the cry for at least 15 years.
The 21st Century equivalent of the rag and bone man.
*awaits responses from younger people whos only point of reference is the White Stripes song "rag and bone", and wonder what I am wittering on about*

I see/hear loads of them when I`m out and about.30 Year Challenge : To be 30 years older. Equity : Don't know, don't care much. Savings : That's asking for ridicule.0

I got stuck behind our local rag and bone man today. They come round about twice a week. Saved me paying £10 to get rid of my old freezer.Illegitimi non carborundum.0

I think the responses you're going to get are more likely to be similar to the first two.
Where you been blue? Under a stone?
Twice a week I reckon they're around here but seeing as most of it is a week day you only find out if you work from home or catch the odd Saturday.0 -

we hear one often..when we moved he took loads of stuff off us..It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.0 -
Ours rings a bell as he drives along the road... he comes round every month or so#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

In my area the rag and bone man did seem to finish. But now he's back with a vengeance. Price of metals, I imagine, with China taking over the world.0

I've not seen one since 1976. Does he have a horse?0
