I've googled this but no satisfactory answer. New PC, new wireless mouse. The curser keeps jumping to a different place as I'm typing in Word. Its driving me potty. I dont use the touchpad mouse as i have arthritis in my hands and it is more comfortable to use the mouse. any suggestions how I can stop it?

Use a wired mouse instead of a wireless one

For some reason that conjures up an image of someone jumping up and down and swearing at their computer!

Does the problem occur if you use a wired mouse? If so, is the trackpad enabled? Maybe you're brushing against it as you type. You should be able to turn it off (probably via the Control Panel).

look in the hole where the light comes out on the bottom of the mouse
you will get this if there is a hair or other similar object caught in there

Uuugh, disgusting! Unless you're a proctologist. Then I suppose it's all in a days work.

It's the surface you are using - I'll bet it's shiny and the laser is reflecting off it.

esuhl's pointer is the most likely - that you're brushing against the touchpad. I know someone in that situation who just put a credit card over the touchpad (!) as they were entirely non-techie, but it should not be too difficult to find where to turn the touchpad off. (If you have trouble with that, post here with details of operating system and drivers you're using.)
