I've hired a rug doctor carpet cleaner from the local supermarket to clean the lounge carpet but it's SO bad it's not really having much effect

Can anyone suggest a strong product that might work???

Try Vanish carpet and upholstery cleaner, my son uses it after he has walked muck in from the back garden and he thinks it's great.0

The sure fire way would be to get a professional carpet cleaner in to do it...!
One thing to take into consideration if using "vanish" (Or similar) is that it leaves a residue in the carpet which attracts dirt and leads to rapid re-soiling. It really is a short term fix.
What you need to do is spray the affected areas with a heavy duty "Traffic lane cleaner", scrub with a brush then clean in the normal way using the rug doctor.
I believe that Rug Doctor sell traffic lane cleaner but I don't know how good it is. (If not, PM me and I'll send you details.)0 -
What's the carpet made of, some berbers you can put a drop of bleach in the water.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving, Gardening, and Crafting boards.

I vote for Vanish carpet cleaner too, the aerosol one for stains is really good. When I hire a carpet shampooer I make up a mix of warm water, a couple of scoops of Vanish powder, (for coloureds not whites), and a bit of shampoo. I spray it on, go away and leave it for about 45 mins and then shampoo as normal, but do plenty rinses, I usually do two washes and then rinse until the water is clear or my back gives out whichever comes first. I do this on a pale yellow wool carpet, and I think it makes a difference. But, I would try a hidden corner to test, just in case of disasters.0

I vote for a new carpet if it's that bad.
