How to be a good employee without being taken advantage off?

Before I start I don't mean this to be a blow your own trumpet thread but I don't know what other way to put it.

My time keeping and attendance is impeccable, I've one of the best records in the company, I go in do my work go home, I enjoy my work so I generally fly through it, the problem is once I get my work done I get shipped of to help someone else get there work done, once I arrive the other person see's this as an excuse to do !!!!!! all so I am left doing there work aswell and never get any thanks for it, in fact I am lowest paid:( The others generally seem to go so slow they get overtime out of it, I've never been offered overtime as I'm usually to far ahead. I just feel like I am being made a mug out of, recently a few of us at work had a funeral so we got out a few hours, I returned sharp after the funeral and was told "Wow you were quick" while the others never bothered returning, wish I was as smart as I got the others work to do.

I like MY work, and MY work only, I don't like others jobs or I would of applied for them, I like MY job so how do I get to do my job alone? I think the answer is go on a go slow but I think i've been like this to long and they'll catch onto me. I suppose being shipped around different departments show how versatile I am, sadly its not reflected in my pay

Any ideas?

    Welcome to Office Politics.

Really, this is something you should bring up during a review. I wouldn't offer doing other people's work, let them ask first.

I have this at my company, one person is pure lazy. He is also so thick skinned as he doesn't care when someone is rude to him after making a mistake, but I'm constantly dragged into it and I get whinged at because I use to do that job, and they want me to do the work. The up side is I know I'm paid far more than him - but still.

Infact, I'm looking at him now and he's virtually asleep - honestly (although I've done all my work and I know he has work to do)!

    But thats how work operates.

Your either the Sh!tter or the Sh!ttee..make sure your not the former.

There is no virtue in hard work. Good workers always get dropped on and the laggards are generally allowed to lag.

I'll bet if you so much as raise a voice of dissent, they will crack down on you...

Thats it you see..hard work..conscientious..mugs game.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Well, all I can say is pace your own work better. I prefer to be busy (I'm here when I'm not), but I hate doing a job that someone else should be doing or has messed up on!

By rushing through your work, you are opening yourself up to be dumped upon by being asked to help someone else in the office who is struggling. Those that are lagging feel no need to work because there is no reason for them to do so because you will do it.

Ask your line manager for some additional responsibility, ask to attend a training course to learn more skills to help you move upwards in the company - the more responsibility you take on then the more money you can expect to earn. In the meantime, pace yourself with work don't rush through it leaving you at a loose end and thus covering for someone else whilst they sit on their backsides filing their nails or whatever it is they do to pass the time.

Sometimes there are extra things you can find to do which are your job.

Once, I re-punched all the holes in the documents in a Lever Arch file so that the pages lined up nicely. I had to put re-inforcing rings round some of the holes. These documents weren't required very often (if ever), so it was fairly pointless, but better than doing nothing.

It can but its like coming off drugs. You have to do it gradually otherwise its more apparent. Just start a slow but gradual wind down until you are acting in the same way as other colleagues.

    Three options

    1. Do the other person's work first thing in the morning and then announce to your boss that you have cleared x's backlog and now everything should now ok but then ask for some overtime at the end of the day to finish your own work.

    2. Do your own assigned work and go home as soon as it is finished your boss will love you as you will get paid less for working less hrs.

    3. stop working in the public sector.
