There aren't that many immigrants....
Probably more a change in culture - less going to the pub being "the done thing" for the weekend.
also maybe less post work socialising, more going home to the family? longer working hours and commute probably mean less available time to drink. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -

Lidl and a 'craft beer shop' the only places I buy from nowadays.
Wychwood Goliath at 99p at bottle a very nice drop, craft beer sho for 'treat ales'. Brains SA at 1.19 I think."An arrogant and self-righteous Guardian reading tvv@t".

It seems as if cheap alcohol from the supermarkets is really pounding the old "traditional" off licenses.
I'm not even sure if it's a question of being that much cheaper in a lot of cases, it's the convenience factor.
You shop there anyway every week, and whereas in the past the selection/quality wasn't that great, you can now buy really good quality products with a bigger choice and range than most off-licenses.
I've shopped at Oddbins in the last year maybe twice, but both occasions it was because I happened to be in the area and I knew they sold what I wanted. If I want a really high end single malt, they don't sell it, and I have to go to a specialist shop or buy online. If I just want a bottle of Smirnoff or Glenfiddich, then the supermarket is more convenient.... Or even the Spar down the road for that matter.
I think an off-license these days really has to have a niche, either really specialist/high end, or very convenient to a housing estate, etc. Because they can't win on price or selection.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

Its a surprise its taken this long - they haven't made any money for years, they just didnt shoot themselves in the foot with viral marketing like Threshers!Give yourself a Chistmas bonus £14 a week!
Total so far £280 -
Their biggest problem will be too much debt and high property prices.
Just like most of their customers.
But they'll look to blame something else.
Just like most of their customers.
Majestic seem to be doing extremely well - maybe it's just the Oddbins business model that's wrong and your simple theories are just, well just nonsense0 -
Technology must be the culprit, social networking - gaming is now all the rage at home and people don't want the internet remembering what happend when getting drunk or perform badly at games, therefore green tea is [STRIKE]my[/STRIKE] a substitute causing the decline in alcamahol consumption.*
But hey, BBQ season will be soon upon us and might u-turn the numbers.
*there's no have a green tea emoticon.0 -
Twice yearly 'Booze Cruise' saves me loads of money. I get through about 4 or 5 bottles a week. It's about half the price in France, provided you stick to the cheaper end. With cigars half price on the boat, I spend about £1,500 each trip - marginally less than 50% of UK prices. So £17 for the ferry, a bit of petrol, and a superb £160 lunch (for 2) and I've still saved a huge slice of my hard-earned pension.
