Alcohol consumption in 2009 saw the sharpest year-on-year decline since 1948, figures from the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) suggest.
The data showed a 6% fall in 2009 - the fourth annual drop in five years.
The association said UK drinkers were now consuming 13% less alcohol than in 2004, below the EU average.
Pubs, bars, off-licences, restaurants and supermarkets all saw alcohol sales fall, the HM Revenue and Customs data from UK producers and importers showed.
Alcohol does not seem as cool as it used to be. The binge drinking culture has subsided a bit and there also seems to be quite a crack down on underage drinking. When I was 16 it was pretty easy to get served somewhere, these days anyone under 30 risks getting id'ed.0 -
there's definitely a decline in drinking it seems

Men and women of all ages are slowly curbing their excesses and drinking in moderation, according to the annual survey from the Office for National Statistics, which covers England, Scotland and Wales.
It suggests that heavy drinking is falling, abstinence is rising, and young people are leading the drive towards healthier drinking.
The decrease among some groups even pre-dates 2002, with men aged 16-24 drinking 26 units a week on average in 1999 and just 15 units a week in 2009, according to the ONS figures. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -

That's one thing that's true. I went out on Saturday about two weeks ago, just out and about in the "bog standard" places in Portsmouth. Out of the four places we went to, everybody was being IDed.
I guess a lot of the 16 year olds get older siblings to buy their booze from the supermarket or nick their parents when they're not looking0 -
this is from a year ago but suggests a trend.

It looks like it may have nudged up slightly in 2010, with a decrease in beer consumption, but an increase in wine and spirits - maybe an indication of more women drinking?

The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA), which analysed HMRC alcohol tax returns, said that the amount the UK population drinks remains lower than it was 10 years ago, with consumption continuing to stay broadly flat. Overall consumption rose just 0.6% in the year, compared with a 6.1% fall in 2009.
The BBPA said the figures also showed a trend away from lower-strength drinks such as beer towards stronger drinks. Consumption of spirits rose 4% and wine by 1.1%.0 -

Think i'll be popping into Peckham Lidl shortly then.
Sainsbury's near me always has a 2 for £3 deal on bottled ales. Some pretty decent ones about too (St Peters, Hook Norton)0 -
You've just reminded me, bought a bottle of Adnams from my Co-op on offer. May have to open soon!0

There aren't that many immigrants....
Probably more a change in culture - less going to the pub being "the done thing" for the weekend.
I think the weekend drinking is still quite common, but my dad used to go to the pub every night on the way home from work. And drinking at lunchtime is not so common.
I have hunch that people drink less, but in a more concentrated way.0 -
