New York City Pass

Hi
I would like to know if these passes are worth buying. My girlfriend an I are going over Easter to NYC. We have been looking at a 2 day hop on/off and pass for $140 each. Any advice appreciated. Thanks

  • I was looking through that but there is a lot of stuff there. I can't find anything about this pass. I just want to know if anyone has used it. Thanks

What I normally do with city passes is check out what attractions you get free/reduced price, work out how many you will definitely visit, how many you might visit and see if it will save you money based on the standard admission price.

Just because somebody has bought one and thought it was good value doesn't necessarily mean that you would save money.

    Hi,
We looked into the City Pass before our trip to NY last month.

We listed the attractions we wanted to visit, I costed them up individually then compared the total to the price for a City Pass. It worked out more expensive for us to buy the City Pass so just did the individual visits and paid for those.

Ouch $140 each! Save your money!

Its much more fun and far cheaper to use the subway. The buses frequently get stuck in traffic and it can prove quicker to walk. Walking a block north-south takes less than a minute.

Buying an unlimited metrocard for a day or a weeks pass is by far the cheaper option. When we went last year I think the 24hr metrocard cost $7 and for that you can chop and change lines and get on and off as often as you wish.

Subway VERY safe, well protected by uniformed police and plain clothes. Never once felt in danger and locals only too eager to assist if you get lost! Far more pleasant than the London underground.

Perhaps treat yourself to the odd cab ride maybe. They have to charge set rates so won't rip you off.

Have fun. Wish I could come too :)

I bought the 5 day pass a few years ago, we never used the buses though, just the attraction part of it and the vouchers.

I paid nowhere near $140 though so mine easily paid for itself.

We got $10 a day free to spend in Planet Hollywood as well as queue jump for places like Maddam Tussauds.

If you want a NY Pass have a look at the one that doesn't include the bus, $110 and as other people have mentioned have a look at what it would cost you to go in the attractions individually or using money off vouchers.

This is the way to do it.

Last year, we did just this and it was possible to make the 7 day pass worthwile, in conjunction with a 7-day Metrocard. Didn't think it would be at all possible to make the 3-day card cost effective, unless we were going at it like the clappers from dawn to dusk.

Also shop around for discounts - we found plenty of sellers offering 10-25% off the pass price, which helped with its efficency.

I got one a few years back (think i paid $89 a piece at the time for a 3 day pass).
It more than paid for itself. Went to places I wouldn't normally purely because they were included in the pass.
    Did -
    Carnegie Hall Tours
    Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises
    Empire State Building Observation Deck
Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum
    Madame Tussaud's New York
Madison Square Garden, All Access Tour
    NBC Studio Tour
    Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum
Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island Immigration Museum Ferry
    Tour at Lincoln Center

Also did the natural history museum which was good.

I'm with the rest of the people. See what you want to do and cost it up.

When planning also make sure you do all the things in the same area in the same day to save moving around the city too much.
