Have just recieved a letter from Lloyds TSB offering to sell my shares for £30 or donate them to charity for nothing. Do you think they are tidying things up for a takeover or merger ?.

No, just trying to get rid of small shareholders who cost a lot to service.0

Most large companies do this from time to time.
All they are trying to do is reduce the number of small shareholders they have, as it reduces the number of letters/annual reports etc that they have to send out each year.. thus reducing their costs.
I assume you've got this letter as you don't have many Lloyds TSB shares..
However, if you don't want to sell than you don't need/want to do anything just in case there is eventually a takeover or if you are happy holding the shares and not receiving the paperwork with some companies you can sign up to be emailed these (rather than through the post) or you can transfer them to an online broker like Selftrade who will hold them on your behalf (+ if the shares are worth more than £500 they will pay you £50, if you are not already a customer and if you are referred by an existing one)
I'd be happy to refer you if you wanted (just send me a PM)

Hello Cagey
I got a letter too. I have under 500 shares, I just assumed they were telling me about their share dealing service! too expensive though. I sold some Northern Rock shares through Hoodless Brennan brokers for £7. I had to send them my certficate. The transaction was easy.
I think I should maybe read the letter again!

Apart from the fact that Hoodless Brennan have a slightly dodgy reputation (having been fined by the FSA in the past), its actually cheaper to be referred to Selftrade (if you're not a customer) and want to sell some shares as you would actually be making an extra profit by doing so.

Thanks all, only have 440 shares & think I will hang on until a takeover bid. Did think £30 dealing was a bit steep.0
