Car insurance renewal more expensive than same insurer on price comparison

Hi all,

I'm 25, had a license since 2006 but only started driving last year and took out insurance from Admiral, which was the cheapest quote I received. Problem is, they're still the cheapest quote on price comparisons this year but their renewal quote for is significantly higher (£140) than that figure.

Does anyone have any tips as to how I can try to get them to give me my renewal at the lower price?

Thanks,
Jo

Are you comparing the same distributor to the one you bought it to (i.e. same quote comparison site)? Different sites give different terms.

    ask them?

  • I've tried several comparisons and while there are variations, they're still nowhere near the renewal quote.

I'll definitely ask, I was just wondering if this is a common occurrence and whether there's any angle I should take.

    Thanks for your help.

Probably a first year marketing discount being applied (which is lost at renewal). Some companies will offer discounts to those phoning up. Others will not.

Why do you specifically want to renew?
If a new policy is cheaper why not buy that??

The only warning I would give is make triple sure that all the details are correct and it's not just cheaper because you've missed something off.
Comparison sites give the cheapest prices but in order to do that they often miss out options like NCD protection so they lure you in and then you find out you need to add things on.
If you are inputting the details then it's your responsibility to make triple sure they are correct and sometimes comparison sites pass the WRONG details to insurer sites.

You ened to absolutely be sure to rule out the possibility of a cheaper quote because you've missed soemthing out.
If I am nervous about this (as I am with flight or holiday bookings that are hard to cancel) then I ask my partner to check it all over as well so that way there are two pairs of eyes.
It saves a lot of grief as ameding/cancelling can be costly.
  • Thank you both for the advice, will take it into account!

    It's common.
It relies on apathy and inertia, the customer renews at the vastly inflated price.
Tell them you don't want to renew, preferably in writing and signed for, and take out the new policy and save £140

Have a chat with them - i'm insured with admiral and my renewal fell by £30 a month.
