Greece

Thinking about Greece first week in April. Mulling over the idea of flying to Athens and putting together a classical tour but can only stay 5 -6 days.

Will probably make use of the Youth Hostel in Athens and cheapo accommodation en route. Any suggestions, ideas or your thoughts would be gratefully appreciated, especially info on local transport, cheap, safe places to stay (two gals 50+)

Thanks in advance.

OK then, some random notes from passing through Athens twice a year on the way to and from the islands.

Flights to Athens: Easyjet and BA both go there (amongst others).

Local transport in Athens: You can buy a 24 hour pass that covers the metro, buses and trolley buses for about 3 euros. These are frequent, and travel around the centre is easy. Validate the ticket in the machine before use. There is also a tram service that runs almost to Pireaus along the sea front but does not really go anywhere useful !

To get from the airport to the city, there are three main bus routes (X94-X96) that go to Syntagma Square, Pireaus and Ethniki (closest metro) - I forget which order, however the Olympic redevelopment has seen a train line to the airport (but never used it, but its more expensive than the bus but faster). The bus costs E3 each way. Buy the tickets at a booth by the bus stops outside departures (out of the door and turn right). Theres also a bus to Rafina where there are further ferry options.

I believe if you buy the tickets for the Acropolis first, then the ticket covers entry for some of the other sites, but not vice versa. Someone may be able to confirm this.

You will see advertised "three island tours" usually to Hydra, Poros and Aegina. Ignore these - they are a rip off as you can do exactly the same yourself on the local ferries and hydrofoils for a fraction of the cost - for most boats ferry tickets are purchased at the quayside on the day of travel as well as outlets in the centre, but also can be purchased further in advance if required.

If you are using the ferry system to get out to the islands, theres often the option of travelling overnight, getting a cabin (saving hotel costs) or even cheaper, booking a seat and kipping in that.

    Have fun.
