    Decking? Is this 1990?

Composite decking is the thing now andy, looks the bees knees
  • We got ours from Travis Perkins. We bought the longer lengths (3m) which worked out a lot cheaper. TP are also more flexible on price, so best thing do do is to work out how much you will need (giving yourself 10% extra for errors) and then price it up from the different shops. Wickes worked out cheapest but we wanted the longer lengths, so we went to TP and haggled on the price and got it to the same as wickes but with free delivery.
  • Has anyone used composite decking? Thinking about this for outside my back door but not sure how it compares to the conventional stuff in real life, only have the manufacturers blurb to go by and obviously they're saying it's amazing! I realise it's a lot more expensive but don't want any maintenance.

There are loads on the market, some real nasty stuff too, the only good one is Twinson, made in Belgium. I've got it on my house and gonna have it when we move. Its non slippy in the wet so good for the kids.

  • Do not buy decking from B&Q.It's only fit for firewood.

Try a builders merchant or timber yard.My local timber yard (Howarth Timber) have everything you need to do the job and will give you advice on what you need if you ask them.I'm sure you will have something similar in your area.

    hi everyone!

im finally getting off my lazy !!! and building the decking this weekend. i have all the components ready, all sourced the moneysaving way over a few months from various sources (b and q flash sale, jewsons, screwfix etc). now once the unit is built, i was wondering what deckng oil / stain i should use?

i have read about a hundred different peoples posts regarding the oil vs. stain debate, cuprinol vs ronseal, linseed oil vs other oils etc. does anyone have any useful experience as each opinion contradicts each other.
so far my best guestimate will be i will buy 2.5 litres of an oil based named product (probably cuprinol) that has a slight tint to it (looking for the wet teak look), but no stain (being tanalised wood im guessing the stain will be repelled wheras oil will be absorbed). is this accurate? im hoping for as maintenace free and grippy finnish as possible as the deckng will be walked over all year round! any tips to make it grippy?

any advice would be very greatly appreciated, and as its friday afternoon im hoping there are hundreds of MSE`ers bored witless looking forward to the weekend that will offer advice! cheers guys

Always look lengthways down the desking plank before you buy it to make sure its not warped.
Personally I would buy pressure treated planks and not bother with stain at all.

I walked into B & Q today and the assistant came over and said, "Do you want decking?".

Luckily, I managed to get the first punch in.

    hi guys,

decking now built (as of 9:40pm last night!), and im wondering how long i can or are meant to leave the bare tanailised wood decking before i oil it. can i do it as soon as there is a nice day, or do i have to leave it to "dry out" for a few weeks / months first. cheers. went with cuprinol decking oil and preserver by the way - natural cedar colour. fingers crossed it doesnt look gash when its done!

    cheers
