Whistling noise at high speed - touching brakes stops it

Hello

as in the post description I have a whistling noise which only kicks in at high speeds. If you touch the brake, it stops then as soon as take foot off brake, it starts again. This does not happen around town just out on the highway. Can anyone advise what this might mean?

Hubby says could be brakes wearing out but wouldn't I get a grinding noise if that was the case?

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

How about take it to a garage?

It really could be anything, and the braking be coincidental. Whilstling noise is usually a trim loose, but can't think of any trim around the brakes that would get much air to make that noise.

Does this noise worsen with speed or is it just at high speed?

Does it stop if you slow down or is it ONLY affected by the brakes?

Could be the wheel bearing going. They often start as a high-pitched whine and rapidly get louder over time.
  • Really needs someone competent to jack it up and have a poke nose.

A possibility that a brake pad is being vibrated in place by the movement of the disc, high frequency vibration will set a squeal up, often cured by taking the pads out, and coppaslipping the non friction parts including the anti squeal shims.

Don't leave it, get it looked at.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
if you have a turbo diesel it could be the turbo bearings or a split turbo hose, the noise would be apparent at high rpm and if you took your foot off of the throttle to touch the brakes the noise would cease, it could be so many things , as stated before find a friendly garage is the best idea

Surely you were informed at your last service if the brake pads were low? Or don't you bother servicing it?
