Car insurance quotes: explanation gratefully received!

I used gocompare to obtain a quote on my car. The cheapest at £230 was Privilege. I then put the same car details to DirectLine and got £290. Proceeding further with Privilege, I noticed that it is underwritten by........DirectLine!

Different brands have different customer profiles and therefore different premium rates. RBS owns DL, Privilege, Churchill and a few more I can't remember.
