+1 for the Citroen Xantia. Pull lever and raise the ride height. Also Citroens hydro suspension is so good at smoothing out bumps it is the only car the TV companies can use as chase vehicles at horse races.0

Thanks for all the advice, I think I need to go and look and test drive at a Disco else my hankering for one will always be there and I'll not be happy with a different option. I might not even like the drive so then it would not matter.
My hubby - and my friends hubby - both can fix cars so if parts can be sourced cheap enough then maintenance should not be a problem for us.
My husband won't buy a French Car and he won't have a VW. Both have caused us serious issues in the past - so as you can imagine, my choices are quite limited! Don't berate me for his choices though, please, it's his money I am spending as well as mine so his views have to count.0 -
Have you considered an older Toyota Hilux? Go for a double cab with a canopy and put the dogs in the back.0

The husband was almost swayed by a Subaru Forester at the weekend, tax bracket is putting us off though to be honest, nearly £500 in tax - but this is what it is going to be like with any of the 4WD options - so maybe going slightly cheaper to allow for this. However, I am still looking.
The double cab pick ups go for a lot of money, I am willing to pay 2k ish - it is really only for getting boxes of stock and the dogs around so I don't want to pay more than that. but I think I'll still get a fairly decent car for that money but the pick ups go for that as non-runners. It's mad. There are a couple of P and R regs on eBay for under 2k. if they are built to last then I have no problem with paying getting an old one, and with all the old ones around it does indicate to me that they'll keep on going.
This car buying minefield is driving me insane, peope put them eBay but if they do not want to go for the money they 'want', they refuse to sell them. Then there are those that won't reveal the reserve so there is little point in wasting time in the day to go and see it if they want more than we have budgeted for. And then there are those that 'are only available for viewing/collecting between 9.30 and 5.30 mon-fri'. So anyone with a 9-5 job can win it but not collect it anyway. Sheesh, come on!!!!!
Nothing in local paper or on Auto Trader other than dealers - and you know you;ll pay a dealer more (although thinking I might have more comeback if I pay by Credit Card if it's a lemon though).0 -

This is worth bearing in mind:-
Car first registered before 1 March 2001
For cars first registered before 1 March 2001 car tax is based on engine size as official CO2 data is not available.
Engine 1549cc or smaller – 2011/12 rate = £130 per year (£125 in 2010/11)
Engine bigger than 1549cc – 2011/12 rate = £215 per year ( £205 in 2010/11)0 -

Oh really Hintza. I've just been checking the CO2's. So a big car registered in 2000 is only £215 a year?? I did not understand the wording of it on thedirectgov page - I have it open in a tab.
I might not be entirely honest with him, 0-60 in 6 sconds for the Turbo version though, I think we'll all be terrified and the dogs will be stuck to the back window like those stick on animals you can get.... :rotfl:0
