It should really be removed and the closure plate removed and refitted by a RGI registered for fires. He will also smoke test the chimney once the bird is out.

So how much would we be looking at to get an engineer to do this?

Oh dear, we have this problem! We have a gas fire and have heard noises for the past 2 weeks so we were wondering if a bird could be nesting down the chimney? We now keep getting mess in the lounge from the bird flapping in the chimney-dust and small white feathers. I'm really worried about how to get it out as we have a gas fire fitted into a granite surround and a very pale cream lounge

Follow the advice above, but add plenty of dust sheets over your cream carpet!
