Anyone used Sipgate?

Since skype on my iPhone 4 just constantly disconnects or has poor call quality, I've signed up to sip gate. And downloaded bria to use if on my iPhone

I realise this is probably a stupid question but if a friend in the USA signs up, and I call them or they call me, is it free? Or do I get charged the USA tariff?

Also, I assume I just sign into Bria, and call the number sipgate gave them?

Sorry for the stupid questions, but I want to be sure what i'm doing.

Thanks.

They are not stupid questions at all.

I've got no personal experience of SIPgate, but like all the other VOIP providers (excepting Skype) they are basically offering the same service, albeit at different tariffs.

When I last checked, SIPGate was relatively expensive in comparison to the Betamax VOIP providers but in its favour, SIPGate does provide a free geographic incoming number.

All VOIP to VOIP calls are free, regardless of VOIP provider and regardless of geographical location of calling and called parties.

However, call charges are often incurred where a VOIP call terminates on the public switched telephone network (PSTN) or a mobile network.

SIPGate charges 1.5p/min for calls to US landlines and 1.5p/min for calls to US mobiles. For calls to UK landlines, SIPGate charges 1.19p/min and 9.9p/min to UK mobiles.

By comparison, 12voip.com, which is the VOIP provider that we use, charges nothing for calls to US landlines and mobiles, and nothing for calls to UK landlines and only 5.5c/min to UK mobiles.

Also, I would check first with your mobile operator that VOIP calls from your smartphone are free on your phone contract. The following caution is from the Bria website..

"Because some mobile network operators may prohibit or restrict the use of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) functionality over their network, such as the use of VoIP telephony over a cellular network, and may also impose additional fees, or other charges in connection with VoIP, you agree to learn and abide by your cellular carrier's network restrictions. CounterPath Corporation will not be held liable for any charges, fees or liability imposed by your carrier for use of VoIP over Wi-Fi/3G."

Thanks for the reply. I only really use it over wifi and have already checked with my service provider. I use it to call a family member in he US. They also have an iPhone so can download apps and use wifi, so all I really ne,ed to knows is if sipgate works as in my first post.

12voip looks very good though and might come in handy in the future, thanks for mentioning it.

If you both have iphone 4 then you can call each other direct for free using facetime you don't need to download any apps. However viber is a good app to download as it doesn't require you to make an account you just call the other person from the app and if they have viber as well then the call is free. Works on wifi and 3G.
