Thanks magpiecottage for that information. I shall certainly compile a letter this evening to send. They can have all day tomorrow (Friday) to sort this mess out and cancel these charges!

Just as an update, I did compile an e-mail (in my father's name) and sent it off to the e-mail address given by MagpieCottage.

Yesterday, my father received a phone call from Customer Care Services at Manchester to apologise and confirm that all the fees have been dropped. Success!!! Another big thank you to MagpieCottage for the information given.

Just as a security measure, my father checked his online banking account, even though he had cancelled the current direct debit mandate from the policy running to 4th April .... yes you've guest it, they had already raised another direct debit to collect the bogus fees under a different title of SGL No. 2. My father obviously called the bank and cancelled ALL further direct debit mandates from Swinton. Sorted.

I hope this information helps someone else in a similar circumstance with this company. My advice is please, please, please be aware that they have some very dubious methods of conducting business and once they get you into their grasp, they won't let go without trying to take imaginary figures of money off you! My opinion is stay well clear.

I would just like to add to this, I received today my insurance policy documents from swinton for bike insurance, I haven't received anything prior to this and therefore called as soon as i got home.
the letter said "thank you for renewing your policy with us", when questioned about this, the very helpful woman on the other end stated that it is in last years terms that the policy that unless I cancel it the policy will auto renew!
when i stated that this was quite sneaky she also said that there were several attempts to contact me unsuccessfully, she then gave me a strange tel number to which I replied of course nobody could call me on that as it is not mine!
as it stands now, I am awaiting a call from the manager tomorrow morning to see what can be sorted out! am not too hopefull as this is not the first policy I have had trouble with from swinton!
incidentally the £50 cancellation charge is more then some of the quotes I was getting, even from themselves! lol
