Normally you would use PVA before applying a skim of finishing plaster.
There is a full section here on How to plaster
Never heard of bluey being used before, but could be something I have never heard of?0 -

Myself and OH have come to the conclusion that we must have been ripped off, as a couple of years ago a plasterer said we can either have some bluey put on the walls which was a blue/greeny colour and was slightly rough to touch once applied, as it would give a better grip and finish once the plaster had gone up, but obviously he said it will cost more.
We wanted a good finish and not knowing, said yes. Yes at the end of the day hes done a good job, but we reckon he took the P**s.
Thanks for taking the time out to reply its much appreciated.

Hi Michaela,
It was a couple of years ago - don't beat yourself up (at least you now know for the future).
You may have paid over the odds, but at least you got a good job done.
It could have been worse - I have had quite a few jobs done, paid over the odds, got a rubbish job done and then paid somebody else to do it again :mad:0 -
hello Michaela
You were not ripped off. 'bluey' is a nickname for a tradeproduct called BOND-IT that is produced by british gypsum[that produces the plaster used in the uk] he was spot on using this product as it is considered bad practice just to use pva for the sealing off backgrounds. it is rough to feel because it provides a key for the plaster to stick to on smooth surfaces etc. It is a bit more pricey than a tub of pva around 40 quid a tub compared to less than a tenner for pva.
i use this often product as any other plasterer would do.
To be fair he should have explained this at the time, but as regards being ripped off he actually did a good job.
Hope this puts your mind at ease.0 -
