BT DECT landline phone not recharging

hiya folks,

I hope this is the right forum.
I've got a BT landline phone that has a rechargable batteries inside it, and a cradle that plugs into the mains. The lights on the cradle suggest that powers getting to it, but even when I put new rechargable batteries into the phone, the LCD phone screen doesn't go on.

I thnk that somehow the energy from the cradle isn't being transferred to the batteries.I haven't dropped the phone or cradle, but I'm still hoping there's an issue with the physical connection..Obviously the instructions are long gone.

Any ideas?

  • Hi yogi,
I have two different makes of cordless phones, they both "beep" as the make contact with the respective chargers. One of them sometimes doesn't, so I know the contacts have not connected when placed on the cradle. (and have to jiggle it)

Suppose the first things to check are the contacts on the charger and phone.

Just read your post again .. when you say new batteries, are they charged and the screen doesn't light up?

    hiya, ta for the reply

..There's no beep unfortunately. So i think that means that there's no physical connection.I suspect that the LCD would work if it had connected...let's face it, rechargable batteries don't suddenly lose ability to charge, they gradually lose the abilty to retain the charge.
regardless, I proved as much by trying new rechargeable batteries.

Tried jiggling it, no joy.So, I'd say it's a physical connection. Any advice appreciated.

  • Yes, if the batteries are going, standby and talk time just gets less and less normally.

Not sure if you mean the phone is not charging or if the handset has stopped working. If they're normal rechargeable batteries, double A or triple A , try recharging them in a normal charger and see if it works.

Can you beg, borrow or steal a multimeter, and test that there is a voltage across the two terminals on the handset cradle? Is the cradle powered by an external wall wart? If so, can you test the output of that?

Hi, I don't really want to state the obvious but a relative of mine was complaining of something similar, when I checked it for them it turned out that the phone had switched off when changing the batteries and they hadn't realised that these phones are just like mobiles and can be switched off. In their case the 'red' button had to be held down for a few seconds ( when it was switched off there is nothing on screen to suggest it was charging.)

    Hi,

ta for all the replies.no, i don't have a charger or multimeter. The phone doesn't have an on off switch. It hasn't been dropped.I simply switch it on at the mains, it beeped and the LCD screen lit up, now it doesn't beep, and LCD screen doesn't illuminate.

Very unlikely that it's the batteries, as I say, batteries don't suddenly stop working, they gradually lose the ability to retain charge. In any case, I tried with 2 unused rechargable batteries from the same pack, nothing.

Hi, all the BT cordless/dect phones I have ever had are switched on/off by holding down the 'end call' button for a couple of seconds, which model do you have?

You're correct, I'd forgotten about that, mine aren't BT phones but they have the same off / on "feature" if you hold the end-call button too long. Thanks.
