Mobile phone insurance scam

  • Good news - I live in Swansea and have contact with many of the mobile phone insurance scam businesses. Can't say more, don't want to be identified. The FSA has been having a clearout during January & February 2009 and the vast majority of these operations have been stopped. Be careful though, since there's bound to be one or two who will try to get away with it for a little longer!

charmed i'm sure. i find out who or where this company is i'm sending my fella round with a chainsaw and a case of beer.
  • i bought a new iphone from carephone warehouse on contract around a week ago. I wasnt informed about any compulsory insurance at al. Until i recieved a phone call today at around lunch time, enquiring as to if i had any insurance on my phone, they claimed to be from carphone warehouses 02 customer service department. So they said they could do me a deal for the 18 month contract i had taken out reduced bill from £210 to £105 i thought this was a bit odd, although kept listening. the funny thing was i had taken out a 24 month contract not 18 months. They then were able to tell me all of my bank details except for my expiry and start date :O I told them i couldnt afford the insurance as an excuse to get out of it.

I told the person I didnt want insurance and they told me i had to have it!!! they then said wat wil you do if you break your phone you wil have no cover. I then said I wil just get my dad to get me a new one when he goes on holiday. she then said "oh right how do u have no money to pay for this then? is that wat u do rely on other people for money like a leech. the phone call was gettin very nasty and then she hung up!!!! i was disgusted!!!!

I telephoned my 02 customer services and they said that it definitely wasnt them as they only offer their customers insurance. I then telephoned carphone warehouse customer services who told me it had also not been themselves phoning me. the advisor explained to me they were an insurance fraud company and that this had happened before. she advised me to phone my bank and get the card cancelled.

I cancelled the card straight away and am now waiting on a new one. I also phoned my local police station, they said the couldnt do anything about it :( as usual !!!! but also advised me to cancel my bank card. all of the involved good people were very helpful.

i thought it had happened only to me!!! :(

  • I bought mobile phone insurance for my Iphone from Mobile Phone Insurance Direct/Pier Insurance which clearly states it covers theft. My son had my phone which was stolen from him when he was out - probably pick pocketed as he was very clear about when he used it and where he put it. I sent all the appropriate papers to Mobile Phone Insurance only to receive a decline for cover - wait for it - they don't cover pick pockets. Sorry - am I missing something? I thought pick pocketing was theft. It was reported to the police, has not been handed in and my son rang the phone from another phone and it rang and then was switched off. Has anybody else had trouble with this company? Complete and utter scam - totally misleading - theft is theft as far as I'm concerned. The letter they sent was complete nonsense. Rip-off Britain alright - really angry.

Why bring up a thread that started in 2006 and add something not relevant?

When you buy insurance you need to check the T&Cs to confirm what it covers. If you don't agree with them, then don't buy the policy.

Unfortunately it's not always that simple, I just got a phone call from someone this evening trying to get me to pay them £30 for an insurance contract I'd allegedly cancelled without warning - I know I was sold unwanted insurance and cancelled it as soon as I realised what I was paying for, but that was three years ago. They insisted that they would send debt collectors - well, if they thought I didn't warn them about cancelling a direct debit, then they should have taken it up with me in 2008 when I did it and not now.

It's not always about contracts, making sure what you're signing up to etc. It's about people cold-calling other people, making out that they owe them money and then threatening people until they pay up.

3 - my phone providers - responded similarly to other providers above and said they had no record of these people. I'm glad to see this seems to be a common occurrence. Their tone of voice made me think that they weren't really from the phone company. I've had problems with this since 2007 and I'm fed up of every other phone-call I get being these people but there seems to be no way to stop them (our household is already on TPS).

They're scammers, and warning people about it is a good idea so that people don't pay over any money these people aren't entitled to.

Plus the thread was answered in 2009, so it's not like it's that old.
