Outlook express compressed files

By mistake we opted to have e- mails compressed. This resulted in e- mails in the inbox/sent items/deleted and all folders to more or less disappear. Can anyone tell me how to uncompress these files, it seems to happen at no particular time, but important e- mails that you want/need to keep have gone into the ether somewhere?

    Thanks chuckles 1066- will see if I can restore. I had tried troubleshooting and googling before I posted, but couldn't find anything that would help me.
