Gas transportation charge

My current gas supplier, EDF, makes a 'transportation charge' each month as they say that we are not on the national grid. This varies but is generally around £9 a month. I am looking to switch supplier but no one mentions this extra charge even though I put in my post code. Is this legitimate or do other suppliers include it in their rates??

  • Normally found on new build properties, just switch to a supplier without an IGT charge

I have just asked the question of EDF customer services as to why and to whom I had to pay this charge and they couldn't give me an answer. They just gave me Transco's number to ring and then even Transco couldn't tell me and gave me another number to ring.

So I googled IGT and after finding the trail on MSE.com found the site Energylinx (apparently as a newish member I cannot put the link? so Google it yourself),which at least explained why and to whom the IGT charge relates, the mud is a bit clearer now.The tight Yorkshire builder I bought the house from saved money by not having Transco to install the gas network on the estate and hence we are all paying a premium.

In a previous thread someone mentioned that EDF waived the charge if you took out a dual-fuel contract but this doesn't appear to be the case anymore.

Aah well, you live and learn! I thought that Transco ran all the gas networks.

There are now various IGTs and also independent electricity network operators. These tend to be 'dual fuel' organisations so they install both gas pipes and elec cables which saves the developer having to deal with 2 parties.

  • Also, price comparison sites do not factor in the additional charges for using IGTs...

Ovo do not charge extra, which is one of the reasons I switched to them.
