What will the P45 show?

Hi,

If I start a job after 5th April, will my P45 only show my income from 6th April 2011?

If I fill in a P46 will the P6 show my income from 6th April 2011?

My income before 5th April 2011 will not show and where I got it?

Thanks

A P45 will show information for the current tax year only. It will include your tax code for the year.

A P46 is a form YOU fill in, and doesn't contain information about what you have earned so far. It asks if this is your only or main job, whether you have a student loan, that kind of thing.
Remember this: nothing worth doing is easy.

Your earnings from tax year april 2010 - april 2011 will be on your p60 end of year earnings certificate. All employers have to issue one.
As has been said, if you leave your job after 5th april, your p45 will only show what you've earned from your employer in the current tax year. If you leave on the 8th and get your last pay on the 6th, then it will just show your last pay.

to staff employed by them at the end of the tax year. If you don't get one because your employer says you left before the end of the tax year, then your P45 will serve the same function.

And it's when you were paid that counts, not when your employment actually started or ended.

A P45 will state the gross pay and tax paid from you current employer and any pay and tax from any previous employers in the tax year (if you have had more than one job). It will also state your tax code.

Theoretically it should show the amount earned up until 5th April but as a general rule 31st March would be classed as your M12 payment and if you are weekly paid week ending 2nd April would be classed as your W52 payment. So any earnings from 3rd April onwards would fall into the 2011-12 tax year.

It does however depend on whether your employer calculates on the week ending date or the week commencing date. If it is the week commencing date then 5th April would fall into the 2010-11 tax year and be included on the P45.

You don't have to hand your P45 to your new employer you can just ask to fill out P46 saying your P45 hasn't been received. The tax office should then allocate you a tax code for your new employer to use. These days these are generally submitted online and the tax code is immediately available.
