Automatic date change when printing labels?

Hello,

My friend has just started her own business and wants to print product labels, including the date that the label was printed. I was wondering whether this was possible, and also what the best program is to print labels. She has the old version of Microsoft Office and has used Publisher to come up with a rough design. I don't have Publisher, but have the new Office (incidentally, is it now normal to not get Publisher when installing a brand new copy of Office?), including Word, etc.

So, is there a way of getting a date to change every time, and if so, is it a case of new Word or old Publisher? :o

Thanks in advance!

re the absence of publisher and word, some office packages dont all include the same programs eg the cheaper 1 only includes word, excel and powerpoint

Well I am still on Office 2003, and there is an option in word where you can Insert, Date and Time, and select the format to give just the date or both.

Other office programs can use things like =now() which gives the date and the time or =today() which just gives the date, they will all automatically change to the current date/time.

You can also download templates from Avery to help make labels.

I would suggest either Word, Excel or Access are better for labels than Publisher.

I think both Word and Publisher support "Insert Date / Time" ? (Inserts it as a "field")

Just make sure "Automatic Update" is on for fields and it should update for the print date.

(I know this can definately be done for Word - but not used Publisher - but according to Micro$oft it can be done)

You can get Openoffice / Libreoffice for free.

Regardless of whether it's Openoffice or Word, there will be an option for Insert > Field. This allows you to put calculated expressions in a document and gives more formatting control than just Insert > Date. Openoffice allows you to specify an 'offset' so if you want to print labels for a perishable product with a use-by date of Today+2 then you can do this automatically. In Word I think you'd have to do a sort of =(NOW+2) formula.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
