Contents Insurance Advice Re:Theft

Hi All,

I had a burglary at my house on Friday night/Saturday morning

I am insured the Asda Finance, however my claim was referred to Legal and General as they handle Asda Claims.
Legal and General have now referred to Merlin Claims, who will phone me later today and make an appointment with a loss adjuster.

I feel as if is pass the parcel at the moment

Can anyone tell me what to expect from Merlin - what will they be asking on the phone and what will th lost adjsuter do?

Approx value of the claim is around £3,000.

Thanks

This is all fairly standard, it may feel like you've been passed around, but L&G are your underwriters so they deal with claims. Due to the value of the claim they've appointed a loss adjuster who's job it is to validate the claim and recommend any payouts.

I'd gather together any reciepts, manuals, boxes or photos you have for any items taken and any cash withdrawl reciepts if you are claiming for cash. That will speed things up when they do call.

    Thanks for this

Do they expect you have to receipts/manuals for everything?

Most of it is Jewellery (Prob about £1,500), which has been built up since my 18th birthday (over 10 years), and the majority of it is gifts - so therefore no receipts, and the jewellery was all in the boxes - so I don't have them either. I may be wearing the jewellary in some photos - but that is probably the best I can do for it - will that be enough?

My TV - I have the remote,
Wii - I have the boxes and instructions.
I have insrtuctions for My I pod,
Got a few receipts - for anything bought of amazon basically!

But them is some things I have nothing for - my GHD Straighteners - I've had them for years.
My IPod dock - a present last christmas - and I did't keep the box.

I am claiming for cash - but I've no withdrawal receipts - Its my emergency fund - I keep it in case - as my bank cards have been cancelled/lost in the past so its always best to have emergency funds
The rest of it was given to me by my parents for things I ahve used my credit card to pay for basically

They are basically trying to assess whether this is a genuine case of whether it's fraud.

Photos of you wearing jewelry will be great as will the TV remote, boxes and instructions.
They are professionals and will very quickly decide that you are telling the truth.
They will also be taking a gander around your house to see if the types of items fit in with your house/lifestyle.
If you were claiming for designer suits and Rolex watches and your house clearly demonstrated you weren't in that income bracket then there might be concerns but a lot of the items you are claiming are perfectly normal.

    Any credit/debit card statements?

I would personally be most concerned about the cash as that's the hardest to prove.
But don't worry, they are professionals and will know you are telling the truth within a few minutes.

Thanks - I'm worried about the cash too, but if I'm just hoping they are fair about it all.

I wish I had rolex watches and designer suits!

The only good stuff I have is stuff people bought for me! I'm a skinflint. Even my TV is (was) some really strange make -Acoustic Solutions or something like that!
My computer was a free gift with the phone!
The Wii - I bought with vouchers for leaving a job.
I'm really nervous about the visit!

Next question - how long does it take for them to pay out - I'm already going mad without my laptop - I have a really old one, which I'm using in teh meantime - and its so so so so slow - can't even watch 4od o iplayer on it!
