Outside New York?

Hi,
We are traveling for the first time to New York next March and would like to stay outside New York...yes, I know...crazy. We would like to be able to travel into New York every day and do not mind a 1/2 hour trip by train or subway. Has anyone ever stayed in Jersey City? or any other place not far from New York? We would like a hotel not far from any transport link to New York City. Any advise or suggestions? Thanks

I have just returned from staying at the Hyatt in New Jersery. Fantasitc hotel with the most unbelievable views of Manhatten. All rooms have a view of Manhatten or Statue of Liberty. Modern and clean but a little more expensive but def worth it.
You take the PATH train from directly under the World Trade Centre and its the first stop. It takes about 4 mins and the station is directly next to your hotel.0 -
I stayed at a friend's condo in New Jersey and travelled into New York daily on the PATH train from Hobokien (Hope I spelt that right) right into Manhatten.

This is the website. If you have a look at the map bit you will see where you can get on and off and it's fairly cheap. About $1.50 for a single trip and you can but tickets with several journeys on them already. I found it safe to use and pleasant as well. Staff in the stations are helpful and friendly as well.
Hope this helps you with your planning.0 -

You are very sensible to stay outside of Manhattan as the hotel prices are considerably cheaper and of course the views of Manhattan are unbeatable too. If you are staying in New Jersey, then it's also worth flying into Newark aiport rather than JFK. As well as the Hyatt mentioned below, there are several hotels on Tonnelle Avenue, North Bergen (not the prettiest of streets!). Comfort Suites http://www.choicehotels.com/ires/en-US/html/HotelInfo?hotel=NJ138 offer a shuttle service to and from Manhattan and rooms are around the $100 per night mark.
However, as mentioned by the others, your best bet is the 'name your own price' section of Priceline.com. When registering your credit card on the site, it will ask for a US Zip code. I simply used all my correct UK address and then added a US Zip code - any old one will do. The Bidding for Travel website, http://p070.ezboard.com/bpricelineandexpediabidding will give you all the help you need with the Priceline bidding and you have loads of time to try and get a good rate.
Have a great time!0 -
I've just stayed in the Ramada Limited Tonnelle Avenue a few minutes walk from Journal Square Path station. Despite some mixed reviews on the web it seemed really good - I was on the 5th floor. Path trains from Journal Square go to either the World Trade Center or to several stations up Manhattan to 34th Street by Macys one block from Penn Station.0
