While them taking the late fee in the first place isn't hugely out of order (though they have no argument if you request it back) - they should make clear how much time they need to process it. If the statement states you have to pay by a certain day, and you do pay on that day and they receive it, they have no recourse.

They do make it clear how much time is required for payments to reach your credit card account.
It is stated on the back of every paper bill and on the online version.

"Faster Payments received Monday to Friday before 4pm will be credited to your account the same business day, after 4pm, or on a weekend/bank holiday, they will be credited to your account the next business day. Payments can be seen on your account the day after being credited. "
