I've set 'allow other netwrosk users to connect through this computer's internet connection' on the host.
That enables Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on the host computer. There's no need to do that if you have a router, as each computer can access the internet independently of each other.

Run the Network Connection Wizard and choose the 'residential gateway' option. That's what Microsoft call a router.
  • The op doesn't have an adsl router .. which is the problem.. no NAT/dhcp etc.

ssid and workgroup name are unrelated.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

I've not much experience of wrkgrps; should it's name be the same as the SSID? When the compters connect to the router will they automatically join the same wrkgrp?
Workgroup name and SSID are separate things. Set the workgroup by right-clicking My Computer - Properties - Computer name tab - Change button - type in Workgroup name. Do that on each computer.
  • albert, I see, however I would have thought the router side of it would still give out DHCP addresses. Maybe not.

Thanks I'll play with everything you all suggest. I'm going to try to convince him to buy an ADSL router.
One thing occurs to me. Would his DSL router expect to be providing his ISP connection and somehow be blocking the ICS.
Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc
  • you could try turning the firewall off on the router to test. (allow all incoming ports)

Where is it picking up the ip address from? Could you post an ipconfig /all report?
