I recently borrowed a tom tom for a couple of journeys. I couldnt have got to my destination without it! I am aware that these are expensive. I have seen Panasonic sat nav for £40 int T J Hughes. Are these as good? Would I be better buying a second hand tom tom off ebay? Any sat nav advice would be appreciated, going to take my mum and family out a few time over Easter break and one would be useful. Thanks

I like TomTom units, I find them quite good. The interface is certainly easy to understand and program in. Refurbished ones are available from Tesco outlet for £60 and on Amazon new for £80.

If you have a smartphone there is a possibility that it can do navigation too, but that has data charges for using mobile network to get mapping.
  • As above.Spend the extra and get a TomTom.
Went shoplifting at the Disneystore today.

Got a huge Buzz out of it.

Only if you use Google Maps. All the other satnav programs for phones (Sygic etc.) have you load the maps in advance.

Thanks for all your replies. Managed to get a decent one off Ebay. Just needs updates, anyone know the cheapest way to update?

I have been using a Route 66 Chicago for the last four years without any problems.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

Depends what you want to update. You can install TomTom Home and get routine updates for nothing but if you want a new map it will cost you. They try to advertise a mapupdate service where you pay all the time but I don't think it is worthwhile as the maps come from a service which is slow to update anyway so there are many reports on forums of people saying x is still wrong after 3 years etc. I use speed cameras (not from Tom tom but from Pocket GPS) and update them for £20 pa (pause for abuse on the topic of driving at or below the limit being free) and personally consider that a good investment. My map is now about 4 years old and has not casued a single problem in reaching a destination.
  • You can get a TomTom Start UK & IRL (Refurb) for £52.94 delivered, from the TomTom Outlet store you need to use discount code 'start20satnavdiscount' to get 20% of the advertised £69.99

Thanks to asl9791 on the HUKD for this one.

Once you got a tom tom sat nav you wont really need to update the maps more than once every 3 years ive had mine 5 years and the last update to it was last year after having a 4 year old map.
