  • A beech hedge is nice. It can be cut once a year and pruned back hard if necessary.

Unfortunately our next door neighbours exercised a "plant a native hedge then emigrate to Oz" policy, leaving the house on the market and now both house and hedge looking in a sorry state. However before they went they had a right go at me for snipping off the ends coming across the fence so it's not like I dare "maintain it" for them. :(

you are fully entitled to prune anything that encroaches your garden (from next doors) but as the plant belongs to them - you have to return the pieces that you cut off ;)

We put up a 6ft fence instead - couldn't take the hassle! Although they are now over the top & since the neighbours are not there I will take your advice :D

You have to offer to return the prunings but, unless they say they want them, you have to dispose of them.
