Sent spec letter to companies and today received a call but from who?

As I am on JSA and had been for over a year, Job centre sends me to a company where I sign on, receive more help in finding a job ect.

Last Thursday I had to send a speculative letter to 10 companies I would like to work for but aren't publicly hiring. So I did this and 1 even sent me an email to say they had nothing (rather nice of them) but today I received a call (I was out at the time, my mum answered and took down the guys name and mobile number) apparently to discuss an interview.

Any idea how I can find out which company he works for? The letter itself wasn't really personalized, I only changed the address at the top. I'm I say I sent loads of letters out, it will make me look bad. I've had a look at all the companies websites and can't find his name or number. As this number doesn't seem to be public, I wouldn't see why he would way "hello this is joe blogs from blogging world LTD" so I have no idea how to find out who he's from without asking and looking stupid (even though I very may well be :D).

Thank you :p

    I've been Money Tipped!
Try a Google search of his name+each of the companies names, one at a time - he may feature on one of the company websites or have been quoted in a news aricle somewhere.

If that fails, then you'll have to give him a call. There's no shame in admitting that you sent a small number of letters to a select number of companies that you feel you would like to work for ;). I'm sure he'll understand.

    Good luck.

Thanks for the idea, although nothing. I've noticed his name is similar to one of the companies I applied to though (Ansell and Russell). Probably just a coincidence though.

Have you tried googling the mobile number? It's a long shot but it could be a number they use for business no it might appear in an online search.

I've tried his name, number, name and number, name and town, name and company ect. Even looked on facebook for someone local. Nothing.

mug up on which each company does before you call him, so that the minute he either gives the company name OR gives a clue, you know who they are / what they do.

If they all do broadly similar things, do your best to blag it and hope you are invited to an interview. Then you get the chance to check which address you are going to.

Alternatively, phone each company's main number and ask for him. hopefully 9 out of 10 will not know who he is and the 10th will, and he'll appreciate your frugality in calling via a landline rather than a mobile (as long as he realises we don't all have mobiles with unlimited crossover minutes!)

You could blame Mum, and say she just left a note to call him, but she didn't say what it was about....?

TBH most of them do the same type of thing. Only 1 or 2 different ones.

I like this idea, could give it a try.

I've tried this. Got a couple of people but none seem to match the one I need.

It's a good idea although seems a little fishy on my side... (then again, I am fishing for details :rotfl:)

Thanks for all the idea's. I'll see what the company which works for the Job centre say, but they will prob tell me to use google. :(

Could you call pretending to be someone else and ask for a person different to him, he will say you've got the wrong number, this is Mr X from Y company (hopefully)...

I can't help but think you are worrying too much about this, and that you'd be far better off just picking up the phone and talking to the guy than you are dedicating so much time and energy to acting as super sleuth. I imagine the conversation would go something like this:

Him: Hello? (He may even say his or the company name as he answers the phone).
You: Good afternoon, this is Forever.Insane, I have a message to call you.
Him: Oh yes, thanks for calling me back. I'm calling from Jobs R Us, you sent us a letter last week.....

Bear in mind, he has a letter from you which isn't addressed to him personally, just to the company. He won't be expecting you to know him or where he's calling from. He is a professional person, he will introduce himself!

Go on, stop procrastinating, call him, it may just result in you being offered a job!

    Good luck.
