I had a excel file saved on my USB stick. Now i cant open it.
It has no macros just simple list of numbers etc.

Excel error reads
"the file may be read-only or you may be trying to access a read only location. Or the server the document is stored on may not be responding"

tried excel open with repair - no luck

If you know the name of the sheet, try accessing indirectly by using the path an name of the workbook and the sheet name.
    Something along the lines of:-
    ='C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\[Workbook Name.xls]Sheet1'!$A$1
