Advice on pruning buddleia
Here is my buddleia. It was planted in the autumn having been grown in a pot from a cutting. It's 30 inches high.

Ultimately I would like this to grow as big as possible to attract butterflies in the late summer so is it best to just leave it this spring?
I know more mature buddleias benefit from spring pruning but as this is so small should I leave it? I'm hoping to get it big and bushy! Advice appreciated.

all except the early flowering (pink) buddleia needs pruning in spring really - and as they mature they will send out new shoots - which will flower that year
if i were you (and i know a thing or two about pruning) i would cut each stem (so just above the fork) and cut to leave just one or two leaf sets per stem - that will be about the right height for you to then cut it each year
saving money by growing my own - much of which gets drunk
made loads last year :beer:0 -
Agreed - cut it right back to just 25-30 cm above the ground (just above that fork).
You will stimulate growth, do this every spring, it will grow like mad but will appreciate a couple of feeds.0 -
I cut mine down in Autumn and its growing now. I used some of the waste material as cuttings some have routed fine. I believe you can cut them back in Autumn or early Spring0
