  • Hi mate, congratulations on your DMP and taking control, was the depression induced by the financial troubles or a long standing issue ?
I am also a depressive but manage it very well and only myself and my ex wife know that this is the case.

I totally understand where you're coming from! I also thought that a weight would be lifted, and that I would immediately feel better... alas not!

I too ended up at the GP, who didn't really understand and gave me pills... I didn't want to mask the problem, I wanted to get it out of my system. Do you have close friends or family you can talk to? Don't keep it in! I hope your GP gives you the help you need and deserve, in whatever form that takes!

It took me quite a while to get used to the situation, and thankfully my friends and family have been a godsend!

It DOES get easier/better... I promise you that... you have done a brilliant thing, and we are here to give you anonymous/virtual support! Please use this forum to vent, talk and we will be there for you! Afterall, we've all been exactly where you are now!

    Hi there, and welcome.

Depression is, unfortunately, a byproduct of heavy stress, and just because a problem is alleviated, it doesn't mean your head feels any better, even though the weight of the shoulders may!!!

Congratulations on taking steps to get this sorted; can I just, at the risk of sounding pedantic, point something out, though?

Depression is individual for everyone, and the approach to it also widely differs from person to person. Whilst for some, a talking therapy like counselling may be the answer; for others, some medication may be the key. Some people may need the two, and often do. Medication effectively dampens the extreme emotion that all too often accompanies depression. It may be that persistent, negative patterns of thinking (eg- I'll never be free from debt) are the cause of the depression; finding a sympathetic ear may be the key to a person getting through the tangled thoughts and moving on. However, some people may just be predisposed to depression, and may find it difficult to nail down why they are depressed.

Yes- see the GP; don't be surprised if they suggest a combination of things, ie. exercise, referral to a counsellor, or indeed medication, but either way, you'll feel better, as the above poster has said, by taking steps to sort it out.

I am a staff nurse, and work in a psychiatric hospital. I've had mild depression, and although I've not taken medication (Not needed to), I still get anxieties, particularly about my debts. I really, really get what you're saying, and wish you all the very best.

  • ...and, after reading the rules of the forum, maybe I shouldn't have offered medical advice- sorry about that, but the GP will confirm what I've said. The idea is, however, to talk to an expert- they will advise the best course of action.

  • My depression has been based on things around me that has just put me in a low mood After talking to my doctor i have decided to go for counselling and up to just recently just come off medication, I have started looking at the things that make me low and starting to change my ways on the things i say and do and make those changes to put me in a better and more positive mood. I have set myself a mini challenge, My debt at its highest was £5000 (February2011) even though i am on a debt management plan i want to set this next year by trying to clear my debt instead of the three years that was suggested, i want to continue with my DMP but by Next year (MAY 8 2012) i want to pay my debt off, every day for this next year i will post on my thread
    sharing how things have been

good luck with the DMP and the depression. I hope that the councelling is effective and your gf supportive. Just be aware that sometimes you have to focus on one major change at a time, so don't beat yourself up if the debt busting doesn't go as fast as you would like.
