Is this a leasehold property? If it is, and your are not responsible for the building but only the inside of your flat then what you have surveyed is very different from a freehold property. Your solicitor will be finding out how the building is maintained and whether there are any large expenses - roof, external decorating, windows, lifts - that are coming up that you may have to pay a percentage of.

We currently live in a 1970s purpose built flat. We had the electricity checked (there is no gas) but nothing else. There was no point as the Management Committee is owned by the residents, we each own a share of the freehold and all works are up to date and planned for.

Fun factoid. The 'I' in RICS actually stands for Institution, not Institute.

I need to get out more.

Edit: Anyway, dont bother with a survey, its not like you're buying anything important, like a used car or something. It'll be fine, as long as its nicely painted smells fresh what could go wrong!

In my day job, I have to refer to a number of the engineering bodies (ICE, IStructE, etc). Every time I have to write the name out in full, I have to double check if it is "institute" or "institution". And every time I find out that its not what I wrote, its the other one. Do you think I'll ever learn?!
