VAT on deposit but not on balance?

Hi

I have just booked a wedding DJ through a reputable (?) organisation. The person intially gave me a cost of £250 which was fine. However, when actually booking I was advised that the £50 deposit was subject to VAT (so +£10) but that the balance wouldn't be! Therefore the real total cost would be £260.

Is this normal? I suspect it is simply a way of squeezing an extra tenner out of my pocket and I cannot see anything on the HM revenue & customs website that backs this up.

Has anyone heard of this type of thing before?

Many thanks
Boot

Are you paying the DJ or the organisation? It could be that the deposit goes to the VAT-registered organisation, but the balance is the payment to the DJ who isn't VAT registered.
  • Ah, I never thought of that! Yes, I am paying the organisation and not the DJ directly, so maybe that is it.

    Many thanks for your advice
