I need another bank account but not a student account as I already have one.

I applied online for a Barclays Bank Account and received a letter today stating it was declined as I am a student and I should apply for a student account.

How annoying. I don't really want to sit around in a branch for an hour explaining why circumstances!
Are you allowed a standard bank account if you're a student?

If you are not working then you will probably not "score" for a Barclays bank account but you could certainly have a cash card account as anyone can have one of them

    Yes.

Out of interest, did you apply online for the Barclays account? The first page clearly states:-

    Please confirm:

    • You're 18 or over

    • You're not bankrupt

    • You don't have a County Court Judgement (CCJ) registered against you

    • You have a regular income or salary to pay in.

    • You're not a full time student.

Generally speaking, if you have a good relationship* with your own bank, they will open an account with little questions asked. When no existing relationship exists, the bank may be more interested to know about your income, employment status, etc. before opening an account.

Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.

Open a basic bank account. Alternatively, try opening another account at your current bank.
  • Re basic bank accounts, Barclays and Co-op both do good ones. I'm with the Co-op and their staff are always helpful & friendly, plus because they're quite a small bank, don't have to be on hold for ages when I call them up!
