You should change your username as it would be easy to identify you at the moment!

And you are right to be wary of a consolidation loan, you will end up with a bigger debt. The interest is piled on at the start of the loan and if you have to default on the repayments, the total owed will be much higher as the interest for the whole loan will be classed as part of the debt. There will be no chance of getting it removed.

The code of conduct that the OFT has drawn up for debt collectors (or collection departments) states that they should not encourage debtors to obtain further credit to service their outstanding debts. It may be worth reporting NatWest to the FOS and the OFT if they persist in this behaviour. Maybe write and tell them that you are going to report them, they may be a tad more sympathetic! (Although I wouldn't hold your breath)

The OFT guidance can be found here...(see section 2.6.b.)

Thanks for message, my username isn´t actually my name but my eldest daughters nick name from work experience years ago!

I want to say at the moment the people I have spoken with to do with the debt have seemed sympathetic but tied by predetermined protocols dependent on situation. They have all been polite and expressed they were sorry to hear about OH illness but just stated that their hands are tied with what they can do to help, so I can´t say they have been bullying but just stating it how it is!!! As regards the consolidation loan in a phone call they were going through different options that might work and mentioned in passing that they could possibly offer a consolidation loan but would discuss options once they had all the information.

I feel some might have got the wrong impression, Natwest have been polite and sympathetic but up until now have not been able to offer a viable solution and have just stated what will happen in the event of defaulting (which I have) etc. I am just frustrated that 17 years with the same credit card and 30 years with the same bank count for nothing it is all dependant on a preset set of steps regardless and there is no flexibility depending on record with them, your credit record and extenuating circumstances and it looks like as a result a lifetime of good credit is down the drain. At present they have not been threatening just factual. Of course I realise that this is just the start of it and I fully expect this to become more confrontational as we progress, we will have to see.

    Thanks for message

Just wanted to suggest that you check you are receiving all the benefits that you are entitled to. When DLA is awarded please do claim carer's allowance. Although you are correct in thinking it is deducted from your ESA payment, your ESA is re-assessed to include a 'carer's premium' and/or a disability premium (for being in receipt of DLA). I don't know what the figures are of the top of my head but will definately increase your benefit entitlement. Also, Community Care Grants are available for items. Criteria to qualify for these is strict but definately worth looking at if for example you need a new bed, your fridge packs in etc. Just one other thought, would either yourself or your husband have worked for an employer who could help. Through my job I have access to a fund available to present & past employees that offers help (financial & otherwise) to ease pressure when times are difficult. Even if you could get someone to negotiate with the banks on your behalf might be a help. Hope this is useful. Take care!

Forgot to add. The quickest way to get your DLA claim processed is to ask your MP to write them a letter asking why it is taking so long!! It is unacceptable that the delay has been caused because they can't find your information!

Thanks for that tip, I will check it out tomorrow as we could really do with getting sorted, at least we would know where we stand with one thing.
  • Just to let those of you who have offered me support on this thread, I have an appointment to see a debt advisor week after next (first appointment that they could do). Have got form from gp that DLA need to complete application and will send it myself recorded delivery so it doesn´t go astray. Have done letter asking ccc to continue with hold on account until meeting. So fingers crossed things might start to get resolved.

    Thanks peeps

Sorry for your situation, I wish you and your hubby all the best.

Just wanted to add that in our area you can get a wheelchair if you go through the Mac nurse. They can get quicker access to one through their OT. Do you not have a community Mac team?
Also any other medical equipment/living aids should be able to be ordered through your district nurse (all these are on a loan basis and should be free of charge).

Definitely call your MP - get them involved in helping you. Costs you nothing so has to be worth adding them into the mix.

As for the "lifetime of good credit..." After six years from when the default is applied, it will drop off OH's credit record. Credit records that people see when looking into lending you money, are only a couple of years long, effectively, so any harm this current situation does, will go away over time. Hope that thought is some help.

    Had a really !!!!!! day..................
Borrowed 1000 off OH mum to pay debts on understanding had to be paid back in next couple of months but would get us out of immediate trouble, then heard long awaited dla had been awarded so dancing with happiness and relief .........then desperate to get place on ground floor as OH has trouble with stairs so called every agent and private ad but because getting housing benefit no one will rent to us , then realised lunchtime that at 2am last night when I couldn´t sleep and was cleaning up I must have thrown the envelope with 1000 in cash in out with rubbish which was taken away at 8 am this morning, called waste collection and they said truck had aready emptied and bag would be among millions on landfill!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Feel gutted so we have now borrowed money we have to pay back very quickly that we haven´t even be able to use to help us out of the pit. I just feel it is as if someone is saying they havent suffered enough let´s just kick them a little bit more when life is rockbottom :(

No answers expected just wanted to feel sorry for myself. Thanks for listening.
