Question about waxing

Options
Hi folks, sorry if this is tmi but I've been getting waxed in a local salon for a few months now but I'm still only hair free for about 2 weeks then spending another 4 weeks for it to grown again properly to be waxed again. I know it takes time before you get a full 4-6 weeks from it but anyone know how much time? I've prob had my bikini done 6/7 times and my legs 4/5 times. Should I keep going or am I wasting my time and money? Any thoughts from people who know more abou this than me much appreciated :)

I have no idea! But i'd like to know is it just as easy to wax yourself or is it best to go somwhere? I'm a bikini wax virgin and usually wack a load of veet on it and jobs a gooden. Perhaps waxing is the way forward, all my friends say i should go (perhaps they've caught sight and think it needs a bit of work!!)

Sorry Liz for hijacking your thread with my question!! I'd be bummed having to wait a month for it to grow back again just to get 2 weeks out of it!

I think a lot depends on your type of hair. I now easily get 2 months from a bikini wax and would always carry on with that because it gives such a nice neat smooth finish, same for underarms.

Legs I've given up on tbh, because they don't stay smooth long enough even with regular waxing to make it worthwhile and I'm not even a particularly hairy person, I will get them done before hols, but by the end of the week, they are feeling stubbly and it's just not realistic to leave the hair to grow in the summer.

Hi vixarooni, I always used to use cream but I usually did a pee poor job! The waxing is great but like I said it takes time for your body to get into the 'routine'. As yet I don't know how much time!!! my hair is VERY dark & also pretty stubborn so maybe that's why it's still not great. I think the idea is that eventually it should be hair free for about 4 weeks and then a week of re growth......

  • I'd persevere with the waxing if I were you. It does take some time for your hair to get used to the procedure ;)
I'm no expert by any means, but I know that if there's any shaving in between, this ruins the waxing.
How long does your waxer tell you your hair needs to be? It only needs to be a few mm, so waiting 4-6 weeks seems very long, considering it's back after 2 weeks. Also, the longer the hair, the more pain.
Call me what you like, I was a bit "tiddly" when I chose my username

    Hi all,
I've been going to salons to be waxed for years. I've always have growth inbetween. When I first started, I was a hairy little monster, now I'm happy to say my corse thick hair is now very fine. :-)

As for my underarms, always used to do that at the salon, until about 5 years ago, and then went to buying wax at home and doing. Just found it easier to find the time to do it fortnightly or even weekly at home. Missed a few hairs sometimes, but hey could barerly see them, as they had become so fine.

2 months ago, I switched to buying an epilator and doing it home....far smoother, and way cheaper. Underarms and legs, will never see wax again. Yup, shaving in between waxing isn't good at all. It encourages growth.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks for your replies. Will certainly stick with it for a while. Maybe go a bit more often too..... I thought the longer I left the more chance of getting them all out at once... Even after 6 weeks I'll still have a few tiddly ones that won't come out!!!!

And yes no shaving between, dreading the summer!!

Can I hi-jack again?! (know its already been done once on this thread!:rotfl:)

How do you do your underarms? I have tried waxing them in the past but either I get no hairs off at all (but do get all the wax off) or I end up with a thick sticky mess which I then have to wash off.

Are there any tips? I end up shaving as Veet and other hair removal creams don't get any hair off (but do burn my skin) have experiemented with leaving the creams on too long but just ended up with 2nd degree burns which took weeks and weeks to fade and for it to be comfortable to move my arms again!Irritating thing was it didn't get any more hairs up then normal: about 5 of them (yes I counted).
Tweezing is what I resort to in the summer, if my eyes can handle it trying to look at that angle!!

Another epilator user here, I use it underarms and legs and am slowing moving to the nether regions:eek: The trick is to start in a small way with sensitive areas like underarms and nether regions and slowly build up to doing the whole area as your skin gets used to it, have achieved with the underarms, the other is still work in progress, not sure how far this will go. At first it is a bit red and sensitive/sore but you quickly get used to it. I usually put a bit of witch hazel on afterwards to soothe it. I usually do a quick session each week on my underarms takes a minute or so just to catch any stray hairs I may have missed previously or have started to grow and find it easy once you get into the habit.

I did have a waxing session a few weeks ago, first time ever, and due to my using my epilator for the past few months the waxing was not painful. It was only a couple of weeks before the hair started to grow back so I have decided I prefer my epilator so am sticking to doing it myself.

I'm trying to remember how long I used to get after waxing. If you keep having it done, the hair will start to grow back more slowly and you'll be hair free for longer. However I stopped getting my legs waxed to save money, for a while I shaved my legs but I got fed up with it. About a year ago I got an epilator and it's much cheaper than waxing in the long run and more convenient. You can just go over your legs about once a week and it doesn't take long, the hair doesn't have to be very long. I don't find it painful to use on my legs, doing underarms does hurt so I use the shaving attachment for them.

Jenniewb - I do my underarms in two stages.

First put talcum powder on (this absorbs any moisture) so should avoid the 'sticky mess' that you mention.

if you look at the direction of the hair growth, there are two directions.

I do one direction at a time. so holding my arm in the position where you are stretching the arm muscle (take your arm as thou you are reaching the sky, and then then bend your arm to touch the back of your neck and the stretch so that your arm goes between your shoulder blade) ummm did that make sense.

Then I put the wax on. First section is the top part of the underarm hairy bit. I put the wax inthe direction of the hair growth, so spatula goes upwards. put the strip on. (helps if you cut the wax strips into quarter, makes it easier to handle until you get used to it) then hold the top of strip and pull down. then I do the bottom section everything is the oppossite, so wax goes on from the middle of the underarm towards the ground, place strip, and hold bottom of strip and pull up.

If your hair is too long, then it doesn't catch. Also used VEET, as didn't hurt so much as the professional stuff.

    Remember to moisturise.

    Good luck

PS - expfoliating is important to stop ingrowing hairs. dont do it any closer than 24 hours than planned wax.
