Good paints

I am about to start on some redecoration - white gloss paint on wood and vinyl matt emulsion on the walls. I will be doing this with a brush, not a roller or one of the new fancy paint pads.

There seems to be a differential in prices and so I wondered if it was a case of 'you get what you pay for.' I've looked at B&Q, Wickes, Wilko and can't make my mind up as the shades that I like are all available in those stores.

Does anyone know anything about paint and can advise on what is the best value?

i have tried the own brands in the past and the quality is poor. Rather than one coat it takes 3 to give good coverage and even colour and they weren't very hard wearing either.

I always stick to Crown or Dulux, you get what you pay for.

I differ in opinion to the above poster- on some points. I have found that own brand paints have been excellent, as good as, the name brands. I used Homebase paints, own brand but not the value range (although colour choice in this is limited), in my whole house and it covered very well.

I would suggest sticking to regular paint rather than this "once" business. I have found that the "once" type paint usually requires 2 coats to give it a good finish and they tend to charge you twice as much anyway!

Something I would mention, I bought water based gloss for my skirts/cills and I wouldn't recommend it. It is streaky and doesn't cover that well. For the effort saved soaking the brushes in white spirit I used twice that trying (and failing) to get a decent finish with the waterbased gloss!

Some of the Wickes range is very good. I've had a professional decorator paint some ceilings and walls and I supplied Wickes emulsion. He rated it very highly considering he uses Dulux Trade paints normally.

I usually go the cheaper route and had no issues with homebase matt/silk paint, but there one coat stuff is awful and we ended up having to do a second coat, gloss is the one thing i dont scrimp on (as i hate doing it) as i've found cheaper ones tend to yellow quickly

As far as the gloss goes I have found that Dulux Once is very good and doesn't yellow anywhere near as quickly as other less expensive ones I have used in the past. Personally though I find the Satinwood one gives the best finish in one coat rather than the gloss (sort of a mid sheen rather than full gloss finish)
