Hard disc drive dvd recorder - any maintenance ?

Wondering if anyone can offer any advice please.
I've got one of them hard disc dvd recorders, now about 4 years old.I treat it now and again to a spin of one of them cd lens cleaners - whether this actually does any good, remains to be seen.
I have a smidge of a problem in that when recording from tv to (separate insertable) dvd disc, then reviewing that disc back , sometimes the actual recorder reads the disc and reports disc dirty/ formatting disc (when it has previously been formatted !! ) .....or there are no titles listed on the disc. A quick wipe of the disc and the titles re-appear !
I think and probably suspect the blank discs I am using are of poor quality and it a case of ' you pay for what you get in life'.
Step 1.
To invest in higher quality blank discs.
Step 2.
Are there any maintenance things i can do to the actual machine .....is is worthy of a can of aerosol air and blast any dust out .......or am i asking for trouble even taking the cover off and
attempting anything. Do these machines have things that need cleaning ?
Thanks to anyone who can offer any advice. If I log out of here I will return tomorrow at some time and thank anyone.
Cheers

Better quality discs always help, but if the laser is dirty or covered in dust, then it doesnt help. What does the recorder manual say about maintenance?0

Hi guys
Can anyone help? My Phillips DVD/HDD has developed a problem in that the date has stuck at 27/03/11 !!! If I want to record a programme instantly the machine still works but if I try to put anything into the timer (and change the recording date) nothing happens. 27/03/11 was the date the clocks went forward-is that relevant? Any help much appreciated.
