Applying For A Passport (Not As Simple As It Seems)

Hi I am wanting to apply for my first passport, however on my birth certificate my name is different to what I have been using all my life. How do I go about applying because surely the passport office will see my birth surname and see that it is different from what I want to apply with?
I have not been married the name "change" is just through my upbringing as I have always to my knowledge been known by my current surname(not the one on my BC)
thanx

I would hazard a guess that you couldn't get a passport in any other name than the one on your birth certificate.
It is possible under some circumstances to re-register a birth and get the name changed on a birth certificate.
Otherwise you could officially change your name to the one you use by deed poll and then apply for the passport.0 -
Your passport name has to match your birth certificate name unless you've officially changed your nameMake £11,000 in 2011 challenge - £120/£11,0000

All you need is a deed poll renouncing your old name and showing the name that you are using now. It's very simple, draw one up yourself, don't waste your money on an 'official document', all they care about is that this name change has been properly witnessed.
The wording of the document is standard, type it up print it out on decent paper and have it witnessed by one or two people you know. You can't use family and if you are at all worried have someone with an impressive sounding job do it for you.
I did this myself a couple of months ago using this http://www.gorge.org/experiences/deedpoll-wording.shtml but you can check the wording yourself. I got my passport two weeks later, no worries.0 -

Expect your interview to ask lots of searching questions especially as you are only officially changing your name days before applying for a passport.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Yes, type it up, fill in the blanks with your details and have it witnessesd. No registrar noone fancy involved, honest. ( in fact if you are looking to make some easy money here's an opportunity for you, because everyone thinks you need some sort of qualification to do this, but if you are an adult changing yor name, you don't)
Of course if this is a first passport there probably will be an interview but there shouldn't be any issues. You could have it witnessed by your doctor or someone like that if you are concerned. I had mine witnessed and posted on the same day, even though i've been using my new name for years.0
