Tesco keep displaying wrong bank details for D/D payment. Why?

I'm 99% sure that when the D/D was set up to come from Halifax, the details stored on my Tesco account were correct. That said, i should stress i'm only 99% sure of this & not 100%.
When switching to Santander, this was one D/D i switched. When it was set up, the details were incorrect, so i deleted them at Tesco's end & re-entered them manually - they were incorrect again. I'll explain:
Let's assume my account number is 12345678.
Under "account number" in my Tesco account, it lists 12345678 ... all good there.
Let's assume my sort code is 123456.
Under "sort code" in my Tesco account, it lists 0000123456. Why? It lists 4# zero's before the actual sort code.
I assume this is reason my D/D wasn't paid, even though Tesco & Santander said it'd been set up & was due to pay.
As i say, it said this when it was auto-set up with the switching team. I deleted it (at Tesco's end) and entered it manually - it said the same (four 0's before the actual sort code).
Why? And is this 'normal'?

I have 3 digits in front of my sort code at Tesco - payments have been collected for years without problem

You have switched to Santander
Probably insufficient time between changing direct debit details and next collection

I have never known any software that requests more than 6 digits for sort code (and I am ex bank and still today I have to input direct debits directly into provider systems).
The addition of zeros before an account number is not uncommon (Lloyds for example often have less than 8 digits). A reference field is virtually free text. However, a sort code box is 6 digits. Some banks are known for quirks but this is not one I have come across before.
That said, you don't set up direct debits. The originator (where the money is going) or the bank that gets the mandate sets up direct debits on your account. Are you sure its a direct debit and not a standing order?I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. Its a quirk - COOP add two digits to A/C numbers to give ten digits
I have a Tesco credit card account and have checked - the sort code is preceded by 3 zeros - same with other RBS cards (I have checked)Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
I'm sure mine was 4 zeros.
Anyway, thanks for your help guys & dunstonh, i'm positive it's a direct debit & not a standing order. I received a direct debit forum & it's under the direct debit link
There must be another reason why they never took the payment from santander / santander never released payment.
Thanks again.0 -
I'm sure mine was 4 zeros.
.
Thats because your sort code starts with a zero (three zeros + the zero in your sort code = four zeros)
