Travel Insurance Cooling Off Period

I took out travel insurance as part of a package (it was meant to be optional but the website wouldn't let you deselect it so I had to buy it to avoid a late payment charge) and sent them an email that day to say I wanted to cancel it.

They gave me a number to call but I was busy then completely forgot about it. 7 days has passed now, but the policy hasn't come into effect yet and as I gave the written notice, am I still entitled to cancel it?

Thanks.

  • Hi
I was looking at an insurance policy last night and it said you have a cooling off period of 14 days. I don't know if this is industry standard so worth checking their website terms and conditions!
    Good luck!!

I don't think you can assume your email means you have put it in writing because the reply clearly tells you that you haven't contacted the right people.
If you get through on the phone take a date, name and time.
This can be useful if you need to ask for a recording (such as when they "lose" your insturction). My personal experience is that if someone knows you have their name then they tend to not "forget" or "lose" your instruction, so the simple act of asking generally makes sure it gets done.
Alternatively send a letter by recorded delivery (extra 74p) but make sure you use the correct address.

Thanks, I'll try calling tomorrow and see what they say. If not it's only £10 so no big deal - I just already have 2 travel insurance policies so don't exactly need a third!
