I have just noticed the upgrade is to be investigated by trading standards.

I have a Lexmark, though ive not updated the firmware (I see no reason unless somethings not working as it should)
Mine never liked the 3rd party cartidges and says I have no black ink. But if I continue regardless, it still prints and uses the black ink
Perhaps yours will too? (Though im thinking not)

It is amazing how many people rush to install upgrades on items...... as they say.... If it ain't broke...why fix it ?

the firmware can't be downgraded once updated, As far as i know the only purpose of the firmware is to block compatible cartridges.

I'd say never buy a lexmark printer again!

I have just had a 'chat' with a Lexmark employee re this.
    I now have a non-working printer.
Again the response was it is my fault as I accepted their disclaimer when I downloaded the firmware upgrade.
Even though it was put to me by Lexmark support centre that this was best for my printer. Why make it available otherwise?
And I was referred to the terms re the original cartridge supplied with the printer when I purchased it nearly two years ago!
When I asked the employee for the reason for the reference to the original cartridge the 'chat' was terminated, for 'technical' reasons. Hmm.
Surely this is a restriction on freedom of choice and reverts to a monopoly?
I shall make further enquiries including one to Paul Rooke Chairman and CEO of Lexmark International.
