Never actually bought a house but you can find out the council tax band online if you're in England and Wales

Its really just about whether it is right for you. We have just had an offer accepted on a house, and we decided it was right for us because we know it is a good area as we aren't moving far, it had the right number of beds, and was near the high street, station and motorway, also has a garden for kids. Not done up as we like to do houses ourselves. Your set of requirements will of course be different. Not really worth asking the vendor whether they have bad neighbours, or if the local joy riders use the street, as they likely won't tell you, go for a wander down there on a Friday or Saturday evening. Go at school start time to see if the road is clogged. Try to have a chat with a neighbour, tell them you are thinking of buying in the area and what do they think of it, they have no agenda. All the stuff about the condition of the house can be covered in the survey, with varying levels of detail depending on age and condition of property, and of course how much you want to pay. If it is what you want where you want, start looking at sold prices (not asking prices) and put in an offer based on that. You can later renegotiate if problems are found. Also view at least half a dozen properties to start to give you a feel for the local market, and what makes one property better than another for you. Good Luck
  • Cheers for the advice,
i actually know one of the neighbours, and on the other side old man and his daughter. the street i know is a quiet one.
the house is in shetland (island north of scotland) at the moment the property market is slow due to amount of actuvity in islands with a new oil terminal being built many house which would have been sold are being rented.

quite taken by it but its only the 2nd ive viewed so dont want to move too fast! its in a good area, has a garden and driveway only thing thats missing is a garage but mabye i need to comprimise somewhere as budget is not unlimited!

    we will see cheers

I think it's also worth considering what you can add to the property to increase it's value for when you decide to move on. We have always been keen on properties that have potential for an extension/conservatory/en suite...etc further down the line :)
