That's a fantastic outcome, and good on your husband for getting written back up. Thanks for updating us. :)

In future it sounds like it might be a good idea for your husband to always get written confirmation of leave, or to gently suggest to the boss that they need a process to ensure that no-one in the company (inc the boss) has this happen again!

Very glad it's worked out for you.

Thank you. It's great, and it's not very nice to think that (a) his well deserved break could be jeopardised (b) he could get a written warning for not cancelling that break and (c) he could be in trouble with the Courts for not adhering to a Contact Order. And, if something isn't put in place then theoretically the company could do this to all their staff and end up with their staff having not fulfilled their holiday entitlement at the end of the holiday year! The boss goes away regularly with his family, to lots of far flung places (which is fair enough), and I can just imagine what he would say if it was him that was being asked to cancel leave!!

Good bosses lead by example, and there's ways to manage staff AND make them feel valued. Give and take is the best way forward, and a good boss will reap the rewards. Perhaps we should send him a link to this thread! :rotfl:

Did your OH tell his boss about the circumstances of his contact with his daughter, i.e. the Court Order?

His boss was fully aware of the situation regarding my husband's daughter, as he was actually quite supportive 2 years ago when it was all going to Court in allowing time off for Court appearances etc., plus we've chatted informally about it at Christmas do's etc. The manager is very new, and he hasn't got children (not that that should make a difference!), and yesterday my husband made him aware that he only has his daughter on alternate weekends and for half of all school holidays, but it wasn't making any difference yesterday. Today's turnaround came from his colleague telling their boss that he wasn't prepared to go to the Trade Fair if it meant my husband having to cancel leave, and it's been accepted by the boss and the manager (who I guess had to choice but to accept it).

However, as someone else pointed out, the Court Order isn't the employer's concern, but most good employers who care about their staff would take that into consideration wouldn't they.
