Electrical Appliences Question.
Ok I am wondering if any of you folks could solve this debate between me and my OH regarding the cost of different electrical appliences. It started off as a tiff about leaving appliences on, I came home from work one evening to find the Iron had been left on unnattended. putting the fire hazard aside for a moment. I explained to my Wife that an Iron uses a lot of electric, as it is in effect a heating applience. She argues that it uses about the same electric as a light bulb. I argue that it uses as much more. Only today I found that shehad inadvertantly left her hair straighteners on overnight. I said that the Fuel bill is going to rocket. But she thinks im being picky and looking for a row, (which I am not). and still insists that it uses as much electricity as a radio.
I have searched for some kind of Usage list, with the highest applience at the top to the lowest at the bottom. But there is simply nothing out there, so can anybody out there help me solve this argument, who is right and who is wrong?
What appliances use the most and is there a way to grade them?
I am all for energy efficiency, and do use energy saving bulbs, switch off the tv rather than leave in stand by. what I need is a list of the highest to the lowest in fuel consumption, in order to solve this argument. Can anyone help?

I agree about the hair straighteners, indeed it was virtually at melting point when it was noticed, thanks for the site duonome, i think that will prove useful, but she will still argue that i am wrong on it:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

For one thing i wouldnt even be bothered about the amount of wasted energy if shes being so stupid to leave these type of dangerous appliances on. Does she want to burn the house down!!!!!
1st of all you need to find out how much energy each appliance uses (in watts. 1kW = 1000W)
Next find out how long it is typically on for in a day (in hrs to get from mins to hrs divide the mins by 60).
By multuiplying these 2 numbers you will get the amount of energy used in Watt hrs (which i assume is what you have on your bill..if its kWhrs then divide by 1000). by multiplying this by 365 you will have the amount of energy used in a year. multiply this by you standard rate and it will give you the cost.
If the appliance is only used say once a week then find out its watt hrs and multiply by 52 for the year usage.
If the appliance only gives the rated current (amp) and voltage multiply these 2 together to get the wattage (if no voltage take it as 230v)
this link gives an approximate wattage of a few appliances if it helps http://www.otpco.com/SaveEnergyMoney/applianceEnergyUsage.aspSmile and be happy, things can usually get worse!0 -
Thats a scary prospect Albatross, you would think such an applience would have a safety mechanism, ive heard of hair dryers in past that have set on fire. I am sure she would take fire hazards as a main priority, as I would hope, But I also want her to know the difference between the power usage of appliences, in order for her to realise what costs more to run, especially if left running.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

What is an Electrisave? Just been on the site you posted albertross, but still couldn't work out what it is . Is it similar to the plug-In Mains Power & Energy Monitor.0
-
It seems to be similar but you plug into the meter, gives you an overall power usage, interesting but I prefer the plug in device monitor:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A
