Advice needed faulty laptop not even 6 months old!

I bought a laptop back on the 8th august and from the minute I opened the box and started the machine it was nothing but a pain in the bum. Having contacted the manufacturer on many occasions asking advice about problems with the machine it was returned to them in September
Having spent over 2 weeks chasing up the laptop as they would not ring me...they finally figured out it was a bad Hard Drive. And the part was to be ordered. With no timescale given and the prospect of a lengthy wait and no timescale yet again having been without the machine for almost a month and still no end in sight we asked for the machine to be returned to us so we could take the matter up with where I bought it from.
Funnily enough the machine was returned with a fixed report. Gits! But the laptop still has problems the advice I am after is can I take it back to where we bought it and demand a refund due to the laptop not being fit for the purpose it was bought? (I understand the 28 days to get a refund policy with shops - its company policy but not enforceable)
I want my money back..what are my chances on a refund?

Did you buy it from a big high street chain?
Many places will say that after the month is up that they will have to repair it - or if they have no in house repair facilities send it back to the manufacturer for repair.
Just curious but what faults does it have and is it at all useable?
